When people are committed to gender equality, what gets in their way of achieving it? Why do well-intentioned people reinforce sexist outcomes? Why does dissonance persist between organizational actors’ good intentions of equality and sexist outcomes? This book
provides answers to these questions by applying the critical lens of gendered organizations to moderate-liberal congregations that separated from their mainline denomination in support of
women’s equal leadership yet remain predominately male in positions of authority.

"Shattering the stained-glass ceiling is now a closer reality with Lauve-Moon's Preacher Woman. This thorough and multi-disciplinary work is a much-needed mandate for churches to address the embedded sexist policies that continue to hold women back from leadership roles. It is this kind of research and forthright narration that might indeed break down systemic barriers and transform our ecclesial institutions toward true gender equity." -- Karoline M. Lewis, Marbury E. Anderson Chair and Professor of Biblical Preaching, Luther Seminary, St. Paul, MN
"In a time when much of America's social critique has been shifting the focus from individuals to systems, Preacher Woman makes an important contribution to understanding gender inequalities in
religious communities from a systemic vantage point and is an essential addition to the scholarly work on gender and religion." -- Benjamin R. Knoll, Sociology of Religion
We created the “Undoing Sexism: Re-imagining Congregational Leadership” course to undo preconceived notions of gender and re-imagine new, more inclusive conceptions of congregational leadership. This 4-session course uses an intersectional lens to address congregational gendered blind spots and create strategies for effectively working toward more equitable outcomes for women in the church. On the individual and community level, the course provides guiding prompts and space for self-reflection and small group discussion. On the organizational level, we highlight the use of research-informed workplace strategies for addressing outcomes of gender inequality in congregational settings. Situated in hope, the "Undoing Sexism” course seeks to move congregations closer to their goals of inclusivity and equity.
